(For his 16th birthday he got a birthday cake made in the shape of a Xanax bar.) For Lil Pump it was the “kid acting ridiculous” video.

Both artists found a way to one-up a certain type of content on Instagram. Someone on YouTube called her the “Lil Pump” of poetry, and they aren’t completely wrong. Compared to that format, Kaur is actually sophisticated. I want to add that, from my understanding, Kaur is building on top of the Instagram inspirational quote format. The problem with Rupi Kaur is that she has nothing to offer aside from a faux-depth through her sporadically changing structure and her identity as a person of colour. It's a theater for her own ego, which infuriates me as someone who works to legitimately fix the underlying issues that lead to the issues in the brown community. Rupi Kaurs poetry is comparable to a teenager sitting on a train and listening to a sad song while looking out of the window. All it does is reek of a vapid and self aggrandizing sense of melancholy. There is no soul to it, and so it can't properly speak for those who suffer in silence. Her work is not produced as much as it is manufactured. I believe that subtlety is a valuable virtue in any poetry, but Rupi simply states a single point and attempts to transfigure that to art by hitting the enter key a few times at seemingly random intervals.

Further to this, the issues in the community being expressed by someone who has such little understanding of how to make a point without resorting to shock value is damaging. Half of them find her to be relatable and therefore important, and the other half consider her exploitative of a social condition that she has risen beyond.

My Indian female friends are particularly polarised by their opinions of her. However, Rupi Kaur seems to make no effort to empower women or educate men with her poetry, but rather make an appeal to their sadness in order to foster an almost romanticized idea of what it is to be in such a situation.

Even here, where the excuse of miseducation or poverty isn't a viable one, women suffer at the hands of men. Rupi Kaur speaks about issues that legitimately need to he spoken about because the broader Indian community suffers from disproportionate rates of domestic violence and misogyny. I'll preface this with my blanket opinion that Rupi Kaur isn't a good poet generally. I have an Indian background but I'm an Australian by citizenship and national identity, so let me speak from that point of view.
